Making The Weight

As you train getting closer and closer to an event may be hard on the nerves , specially when its difficult for you to lose weight, we don’t all have that magical St. Pierre voodoo and are able to lose up to 15 lbs of water weight for a fight in less tan a week.

In these cases you need all the help yo can get, planing a diet months ahead will help you reach your goal easier, as well as eliminating  starchy carbohydrates a couple of weeks before the event (depending on your diet). Some high glycemic carbohydrates are very good to maximize your post workout recovery  (rapidly digesting carbohydrates like sugar), and should be combined with protein, like chocolate milk.

But there’s another secret weapon and its hidden in old mother nature. I recently read in an article from Muscleandstrenght.com About herbal diuretics.

An herbal diuretic (preferably one with potassium and magnesium, these are minerals you will need to support muscle contractions while losing water) will aid in your water loss goals. Ingredients to keep in mind are Dandelion leaf, Uva Ursi leaf, Buchu leaf, and Parsley leaf. Caffeine also has a diuretic effect; using caffeine will not only motivate you for your workouts while under caloric restriction but using it throughout the day will help you to excrete water more readily.

I’m a big morning tea person, (or coffee when im feeling rebellious) a morning tea such as Green tea that helps activate your metabolism, has plenty of antioxidants, promotes bone density, it can help prevent most types of cáncer, lowers cholesterol and can get your system going first thing in the morning, with the herbal addition this will help you lose that extra water weight a week or so before  your big event.

Try different combinations of herbs you can also add organic honey, (be aware of its sugary content and calories, but now and then we can also enjoy its benefits)

Another helpful tip is Tracking your weight loss in a calendar before a fight or tournament, having an idea of how far you have come and where you need to get to achieve your goal keeps you focused, it also Works as a visual reminder on how long is the way there.
